Officials say firefighters are having difficulties tackling the wildfire because of its intensity. Authorities have not determined the cause, but recent high temperatures may have contributed.

Spanish rescue workers say they will assist Portuguese firefighters in the ongoing operation. Portugal's Prime Minister called it "the biggest tragedy of human life we have known in years".
