Reasons Why Women Quit Engineering

Women Quit Engineering

20% of engineering graduates are women but women make up only 13% of the engineering workforce in the US. Researchers followed the progress of 700 engineering students from Massachusetts.

Female students said they were treated differently to their male classmates. They reported being given less challenging problems to solve. Especially during internships and summer jobs.

Their male peers got 'real' engineering work, while they were given 'managerial and secretarial' tasks. This caused women to doubt whether engineering was what they really wanted to do.
