ONGC Finds Oil In Virgin Well

Public sector oil and Natural Gas Corporation has found huge quantum of oil reserves at a depth of over 3,000 meters at its virgin well drilled recently at Kesanapalli village in Malikipuram mandal in East Godavari district in the Krishna-Godavari basin.

The authorities found three zones in which they found oil at one zone and exploration has to be taken up in other two zones. However, at present, it is producing nearly 1,000 barrels of oil per day from the virgin well in the last few days. Given the availability of huge quantum of oil reserves, the authorities intend to drill four to five more wells in the same area to extract more oil in a year and sound confident that once all the proposed wells are drilled, they can produce nearly 10,000 barrels of oil per day from nearly 60 flowing wells and the upcoming ones put together.

At present, it is producing only 6,000 barrels of oil per day from the 60 flowing wells.ONGC authorities say that rigs are mobilised and works for drilling another two wells at Kesnapalli will begin shortly and based on the findings, drilling of other wells will be expedited. They say that extraction of oil from the wells which were drilled at a depth of 2,000 meters and 2,500 meters was coming down due to the exhaustion of oil reserves at that depth and intend to go for drilling of wells at more depth ranging from 3,000 meters to 4,000 meters and above depending upon the availability of oil reserves.

ONGC Rajahmundry asset executive director Debashis Sanyal said "We have got a good finding of huge quantum of oil reserves at more depth in our onshore project in KG basin and we intend to drill more wells to enhance our production capacity of oil from the asset. It may take a year or so to complete drilling of four to five wells at Kesanapalli Deep area." On the other hand, ONGC has been facing severe resistance from the villagers to expand its exploration activities
