Infantry Day

The Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Army's premier pre-commission training institution in Chennai ,observed the Infantry Day on Thursday. It was a solemn and proud occasion with wreath-laying and a high tea with all Infantrymen, serving and retired. Lt Gen VR Raghavan (Retd), the senior most infantry veteran laid the wreath on behalf of the retired soldiers and Lt Gen Bobby Mathews, Commandant OTA and the senior most serving Infantry Officer in Chennai laid the wreath on behalf of the serving Infantrymen in Chennai Military Station. It was this very day in 1947 that the troops of First Battalion the Sikh Regiment, 1 SIKH, part of post Independent Indian Army, landed on Srinagar Airfield amidst enemy fire and fought the hordes oftribesmen from Pakistan's NWFP who had ravaged the Kashmir Valley with massacres, loot and rape with the active assistance of Pakistan Army troops. "Operation Gulmarg" was launched by Pakistan Army in early October 1947 to annex Kashmir using tribals. The 161 Infantry Brigade of the Indian Army defeated the Pakistani designs and drove the tribesmen and their Pak Army commanders beyond what is today called the Line of Control.
