Why Indians Eat With Their Hands

The practice of eating with hands in India, is ridiculed by the west, but here's the deeper significance of this ancient tradition. The fingers when closed together to pick a morsel of food, forms a Mudra, which symbolises grace and humility. According to vedas, the hand is considered the most precious organ, hence the ritual using the same to feed the body. It is believed that the tip of our fingers is the place of Lakshmi and the base is saraswati's abode. Ayurveda believes that each finger is an extension of the five elements - Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Each finger helps in enhancing the food before it enters our body, thereby making us more conscious of the taste. Though Hindu rituals may look simple, they have a beautiful hidden meaning.
