These in ground traffic lights could increase pedestrian safety at crosswalks. Nearly 3,500 pedestrians in Australia are seriously injured each year. One reason for this is the use of smartphones while crossing the road. Buro North developed the Smart Tactile Paving in an effort to address this issue.
The system uses LED lights enclosed in tactile paving slabs to signal when it is safe to walk. The lights are embedded so pedestrians see them even while looking at their phones. The project is an attempt to modernize infrastructure to keep up with an evolving society. Making cities safer for everybody.
