Scientists Turn Urine Into Drinking Water

Urine Into Drinking Water

Belgian scientists have created a machine which they say turns urine into drinkable water and fertilizer. The system uses solar energy and is highly energy efficient. Urine is collected in a big tank and heated in a solar powered boiler. It then passes through a membrane which recovers the water and filters nutrients like potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. The scientists hope the technique can help developing countries where reliable drinking water and fertilizers are in short supply.
