Why Airplanes Still Have Ashtrays

Airplanes Still Have Ashtrays

Smoking on US flights has been banned since 1990 and on international flights since 2000. So why do airplanes still have ashtrays in the bathroom? One flight attendant tells us that "it's because some assholes still try to get away with smoking on planes " Despite all the "No Smoking" signs. If someone does try to smoke, flight attendants need a place to put out the cigarette.

Disposing cigarettes in the trash creates an even bigger fire hazard, since most of the trash is paper. 123 people died on a flight in 1973 aafter a cigarette caused a fire and filled the cabin with smoke. Most Airlines have also banned E-Cigarettes "Because there's an ignitor in the apparatus, and it can cause cabin fires."
