The US Navy will use swarming autonomous drones to overwhelm enemies. It's called Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Swarming Technology (LOCUST). Packs of drones are ejected from tube based launchers that can be placed anywhere.
Once airborne, the UAVs fall into pre-programmed mission formations. They can communicate amongst themselves for collaborative action. While the drones are autonomous, all missions will be monitored by a human. The office of Naval Research calls LOCUST the future of war.
