Gotthard Base Tunnel - World's Longest and Deepest Rail Tunnel Opens

Gotthard Base Tunnel

The world's longest and deepest rail tunnel has opened in Switzerland. Gotthard Base Tunnel is 35 miles long (57.1 km) overtaking Japan's 33 mile Seikan tunnel. It burrows down to 1.4 miles. The channel tunnel only goes to 250 feet at its deepest. it cost more than 8 billion pounds and took almost two decades to build. It will provide a high speed rail link under the Swiss Alps for passengers and goods. The journey lasts under 20 minutes and the trains move at up to 155 miles per hour. A total of 28.2 million tonnes of excavated material was removed from the tunnel. Its long awaited opening was celebrated in extravagant and rather peculiar style.

On June 1, 2016, 17 years after the first blast in the main shaft, the world’s longest railway tunnel officially opened. To celebrate the momentous occasion, Switzerland invited guests of honor from Switzerland and abroad to a very strange opening ceremony.
