Google's Project Loon

According to Project Loon, almost 2/3 of the world still has no access to the internet. Their solution is a network of balloons that transmits LTE internet from the stratosphere. Wind patterns are optimized to provide consistent service to those on the ground. Mission control monitors activity for the increasing number of balloons they launch.

The technology behind the balloons has improved markedly over the past few years. They can now stay in the air for 100 days, and take just a few hours build. Google recently partnered with Vodafone to test Project Loon in New Zealand.
