What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index is a measure of relative size based on the mass and height of an individual. BMI is used to determine whether the patients are underweight, overweight, healthy weight or clinically obese.
BMI can be calculated by dividing the body weight with square of their height. If the weight is in kilograms and the height in metres then use this method to calculate
For Example
Weight 80 kilograms
Height 1.5 meters
1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25
80 divided by 2.25 = BMI is 35.5
If pounds and inches are used, a conversion factor of 703 (kg/m^2)/(lb/in^2) must be applied.
For Example
Weight 170 lbs
Height 65 inches (5.4 feet)
65^2 = 4225
170 multiplied by 703 divided by 4,225 = BMI 28.2
After calculating BMI now check the BMI ranges as follows
