More than 100,000 crucifixes and other religious icons cover a hill outside the city of Siauliai in northern Lithuania. The exact origins of Kryziu Kalnas, the Hill of Crosses, remain a mystery. Many appeared at the end of the 19th century.

During the Soviet era, this religious expression opposed the regime's ideology, and the site was destroyed several times. Despite the political dangers, local people continued to rebuild it. The Hill of Crosses is a symbol of unshakable faith, of suffering, and of hope of Lithuania.
