Yi Peng Sky Lantern Festival

The graceful beauty of thousands of paper lanterns rising in the sky shouldn't be missed. The Northern Thai city of Chiang Mai is the site of the most elaborate sky lantern displays in the country. The lanterns are released during the Yi Peng Festival which typically coincides with the Loi Krathong Festival.

The Yi Peng Festival originates from the ancient Lanna Kingdom which once ruled Northern Thailand. The festival falls near the full moon of the 2nd month of the Lanna Calendar, typically occurring in November. The act of releasing lanterns is a thought to carry away troubles and a way to honor buddha.
