Indian Style Rugby - Yubi Lakpi

Indian Style Rugby Yubi Lakpi

A game that could possibly be the origin of modern rugby, Manipur's unique traditional sport, Yubi Lakpi (Coconut snatching). It's played by 14 players with a dry coconut covered in oil.

The field is 45x18 metres with the goal only on one side. The team wins when a player reaches the goal and the man of the match is presented with a piece of cloth. This game started as a means to find the chief warrior for the army.

The king looked out for the fastest and the strongest player and the teammates were given a chance to serve alongside him . A game equally rich in history and cases of dislocated shoulders!
