These Metamaterials are making it possible to create single part mechanisms. Metamaterials are 3D printed as one single part, but have the capability of moving. Allowing mechanisms like pliers and doors laches to be made without screws or bolts. Metamaterials are defined by their inner structure, rather than composition.

Controlled directional movement allows functions like gripping or latching a door. These mechanisms consists of a grid of silicone cells comprised of different patterns. This creates different levels of rigidity, which allows for flexibility and movement. Mechanisms like these may reduce or even eliminate the need for maintenance. This work was carried out at the Hasso Plattner Institute.
