Why Olympic Athletes Wear Colourful Tape On Their Bodies

Olympic Athletes

At summer olympics you'll probably see athletes wearing colourful tape on their bodies. But why? The tape is called Kinesiology Tape or just Kinesio Tape. The makers of popular brands say it can help with a variety of conditions:

  • Sore Muscles
  • Headaches
  • Shin Splints
  • Back Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Tennis Elbow
  • And More
So does it work? it's hard to say. Some studies say it doesn't do much for chronic health problems. Other studies show it may help reduce pain and increase range of motion. Even a tiny benefit could be enough to make a difference for an olympian. If the tape doesn't do anything more than traditional athletic tape, doctors say it still might help if athletes think it does. A placebo effect might be able to reduce pain and fatigue. And a tiny psychological edge may be all someone needs to run just a little faster or spike the ball one last time.
