Taking Carbon Dioxide From Air

Scientists are developing ways to pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. A prototype air contactor made by Carbon Engineering separates CO2 from the air.

An absorbent liquid collects CO2 while a fan pushes air through the system. Captured CO2 is then converted and stored as a carbonate. Membrane system are also being tested to reverse this process. This would allow captured CO2 to be used for other purposes. Researchers hope a combine captured carbonate with hydrogen to use in liquid fuels.
