Distinguish Between Longitudinal and Transverse Waves

Longitudinal Waves

Longitudinal Waves
  • In these waves, particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.
  • These waves can be produced in solids, liquids and gases.
Example - Waves on springs, sound waves

Transverse Waves

Transverse Waves
  • In these waves, particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
  • These waves can be produced only in solids.
Example - Light waves, radio waves, waves on strings.
