Solar Tower Skyscraper Negev Desert

This skyscraper is actually a solar tower. When it opens in 2017 it will be the world's largest solar thermal plant producing enough energy to power nearly 21,000 Israeli households. The 787 foot tower is in the Negev Desert. It's covered with solar panels and surrounded by 50,000 mirrors.

The mirrors reflect the sun's rays toward the tower generating 1,000 °F heat and producing steam to power a turbine. All the mirrors are controlled by a Wi-Fi network. The facility was built by Megalim Solar Power at a cost of $773 million. The company is looking for ways to make the construction more cost efficient so more solar towers can built around the world.
